In late June they hope to be in California where they hope to spend a year in Pasadena.  They will be staying in a missionary R&R Center.  Their son Vernon lives near the R&R Center so they will reconnect with him and have some time to rest and reenter their USA environment. ·        Bud Gallagher.  Kay Drummond Hensley reports the sad news that Bud passed away recently.  He had been ill for a number of years.

OUHS Class of 1956 Newsletter

July 2003

It has been about three months since I sent the last newsletter.   I hope this finds all of you enjoying the summer months with your families and friends.  Bill and I recently enjoyed our annual summer escape to ³my island²(aka Catalina Island).  It is our special time with our sons and their families.  We spend two weeks there and the first week this year was a fun time with our teenage grandchildren.  They have such crazy funŠreminds me of our high school days! The second week found us with the younger grandchildren and that meant lots of fishing off the pier, card games, beach fun, golf cart rides around the island and other things to keep the grandparents very busy!

·     Darryl Mortensen 784 Santa Barbara Street, Pasadena, CA 91101.  626-793-4746.  Darryl and Donna Jean are now settling into an apartment in Pasadena where they are enjoying being near their son and also the historical, tourist spots in the area.  They are adjusting to the freeways and traffic.  Darryl says ³Managua, Nicaragua was a capital city but things move a little faster here!²

·        Melvin Swan recently had a quadruple bypass surgery.  Lee Martin reports that Melvin is doing well.

·        Don McEntyre 775 Chase High Road, Forest City, NC 28043.  Don lives in Forest City, NC that is the place where he was born and most of his family lives there.  He has been running a small hobby store for 20 years.  He and his wife, Brenda ³have a nice 100 acre farm and enjoy it very much².  They have a web site 

·        Marlene Freeman Riel says she has hesitated to submit any news of herself but decided it would be fun to share a good thingŠher good health.  She says ³I was diagnosed with breast cancer last July, had a mastectomy and have been going through chemo therapy treatments.  My last treatment was February 26 and I am feeling great.  I have lost all my hair, but have been having a ball wearing a different wig every day².   She had a wonderful visit from dear friends Edith Hunnewell Hertenstein, Deronda Marchant Linder, Sally Robrecht Daley(OUHS 57) and Anita Marchant Diehl(OUHS 55) in April.  They drove to Oregon and spent a week catching up on 47 years!

·        Gail Thomas Havens enjoyed a week in Mazatlan with her daughter and another vacation in Las Vegas.  Her knee replacement surgery has been progressing well.

·        Jan Hofstra Smith had a great visit with Mary Lou McConnell Scott when Mary Lou visited her.  Jan has several family members in the military and we hope they are all safe.

·        Janet Alford Olson had a mastectomy recently and is having chemo treatments.  Marlene Freeman Riel has been giving Janet lots of support with telephone calls.  Many other classmates have been in touch with her also and Janet thanks all of you.  Bill and I will spend several days with Janet and John in the next few weeks and hopefully provide them with some fun amidst the challenges!

·        Beadie Sutton Keith has a new address 75456 Augusta Drive, Indian Wells CA 92210. Beadie is recovering from partial knee replacement in both knees.  She feels fortunate to have found a surgeon who would consider a partial.  Looking forward to some short trips in the near future.

·        Sam Turner and Ronnie Ray met for lunch recently in Alabama.  They spent a couple of hours catching up on news of other classmates.  I am forwarding the email including a photo of them in a separate email.

A few days ago I sent you the invitation to join the Class of 54 on a cruise in September 2004.  Some of you are considering going on the cruise and some have already sent in registration fees. I have had questions asking who from the class of 56 is joining the cruise.  I will not know who from our class has registered as the registration goes directly to Uniglobe.  If you wish to have others know you registered please tell me and I will include the information in the next email newsletter.

·        Coylene Gilliam was on our list of ³Unable to Locate² and Sam Turner found information that Coylene passed away in 1997.  Sam says he ³remembers her as little red haired girl that used to ride her bicycle with Don Swearengin and me in the projects across from the high school.²

·        Dorothy Asher Baughman¹s husband Harry passed away recently.  Many of us remember Harry and send our sympathy to Dorothy.

·        Sam Turner sends the following information about a gathering in Branson. ³June 8th and 9th a few of us classmates from ¹56 and surrounding years are having an informal gathering in Branson MO.  As it sits now nothing is organized. If we get enough response we will put together some sort of program but for now it is just a get together.  We have a few people that might be able to make it.  If anyone would like more information contact me at

·        Bill Helf  Sam Turner reports ³Over the past year or so Bill Helf has developed a number of web sites.  Many of them have been awarded the ³Golden Web Award² The site for the  ³Class of 56² was recently chosen to receive this internationally recognized award.  From the link listed you can visit the Class of 1956 web site.² Many of our classmates have contributed. 

·        Gail Thomas Havens, Patti Prindle Hodges,  Janet Alford Olson,  Marilyn Johnson Signor, Joan Roper Pruett and Raelene Brill Manzer (and others in their families) are joining the Class of  ¹54 on the cruise to Mexico.  There are about 125 people from Oxnard High signed up.  The January/February AAA magazine featured the Royal Carribean, Monarch of the Seas ship which will be our home for the four day cruise. 

·        Donny Burrows recently went to Africa with friends.  They spent 12 days on safari.  I have seen the photos of his trip.  He is a master at putting together a slideshow.  I suggest you contact Donny and request a viewing of his slideshow on ³Shutterfly²

·        Gail Weller Brown and Jerry Brown were generous hosts for Raelene Brill Manzer and Bill Manzer in their Glenmont, New York home for a week in November.  We enjoyed sightseeing and of course a memorable visit with friends.  Gail and Jerry also have a home in Oxnard.

·        Joan Wikum Swindle is enjoying retirement with Joe and busy preparing for a move to a new home. Joni and Joe will be planning group travel opportunities and invite you to be touch with them if you are interested.  Joni, as chairman of our class reunions, also asks you to be thinking about the next reunion and send her any suggestions.  Joni and Joe also report that Dale Rogers (¹57) passed away recently.


OUHS Class of 1956 Newsletter-June 2004

It is a beautiful day in Camarillo and I am thinking of all of you as I count my blessings and remember you as part of those blessings.  I know we share memories of our high school days and the many years since those days.   There is sadness as I share information about our classmates.  Some have passed on and others have faced serious health issues.  We must remember to live every day to the fullest!

In memory of our deceased classmates who crossed our paths and touched our lives.  They remain forever in our memories.

·        Jack Daly-passed away on June 11. He had experienced cancer problems but his brother Marty reports the cancer was in remission and Jack had enjoyed some very happy years of travel.  He had a seizure about a week ago.  A remembrance service will be held in Camarillo on Saturday, June 19. Location to be determined.  If you would like more information please reply to this email and I will respond when I know more.  An obituary notice will be in the Star Newspaper.  

·        Jazel Gray passed away in May in Las Vegas, Nevada.  He had been a custodial supervisor at the University of Nevada.

·        Pete Bunch (1955), a retired U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm., passed away in Williamsburg, Va. A memorial service was held in Williamsburg.  Interment with full military honors will be held at 9 a.m. July 14 at Arlington National Cemetery.

·        Jack Murphy, husband of our classmate Carole Skelton Murphy, lost his battle with melanoma.  He was recognized as an fishing expert and authored a book title ³In pursuit of Giant Bass.  Carol¹s email address is

·        Ruth Lee (1957) close friend of our classmate Lulu James Vomhof  passed on recently.  Ruth and her family had been living in Minnesota.

Those facing serious health issues are in our thoughts and prayers.

·        Deanna Hill Middleton ( has small tumors in the pleura.  She is on another trial-an antibody called MDX-010.  She will go to USC weekly for treatment and have next CT at the end of June. 

·        Janet Alford Olson ( will have a PET Scan next week to help doctors evaluate continued problems related to her lungs and heart.   They do have a special vacation in San Diego planned with their sons and grandchildren and the doctors are telling Janet she will be able to go.   She is looking forward to this trip.  

·        Darryl Mortensen ( is recovering well after having eye surgery, with a procedure called vitrectomy.  The doctor reported it was a textbook case and went very well. He corrected a tear in the retina with laser treatment, and the hole in the macula was cleaned of scar tissue, and a gas bubble was inserted.  Darryl¹s wife, Donna Jean reports that ³Darryl was very disciplined about keeping his face parallel to the floor, which kept the gas bubble where it needed to be.²

In this newsletter I am sharing news about our classmates.  Thank you to those who responded to my request for news. I do not include news relating to political causes or other causes.  My effort is always limited to news about our classmates.


·         Bernie Rodriguez (email address changed to Bernie and his wife, Sylvia, recently returned from a Caribbean cruise and are planning a trip to Europe.

·         Edith Elliott Tribbey and Bert Tribbey ( Edith retired from her 25+ years as a Montessori Teacher and has stayed busy with the San Joaquin River Parkway Trust, leading field trips for elementary school groups. Bert is semi-retired but still teaches full time one semester at Cal State University Fresno.  They are enjoying being grandparents. 

·         Sam Turner ( met Bill Helf and his wife Jan in Michigan City, IN.  Bill and Jan had been to Jan¹s class reunion at Earleville IL.  Bill and Sam enjoyed the cool breeze off Lake Michigan while Jan visited antique shops.

·         Darryl Mortensen and his wife, Donna Jean, left California in July and will travel to Montana and Kansas and then on to Florida to look at places where they might retire.  Darryl will also make a trip to the Dominican Republic to assist their missionary team with long-range strategic planning.  They are happy to report that the gas bubble in Darryl¹s eye has dissipated and his eyesight is improving every day.  I will send his address and email info when I receive them. 

·         Joe Zamora ( his wife and extended family enjoyed vacation in Nueveo Vallarta, staying in a beautiful resort called Grand Velas

·         Chuck Drummond ( and his wife Sharon Dewey Drummond live in Portland, Oregon.  Chuck is Kay Drummond Hensley¹s brother and was in the OUHS Class of 57.  They have lived in Belguim, Poland and Bulgaria and plan on living somewhere in Europe in the near future.  He sent a photo to me and both of them look great! 

·         Dick Duncan ( lives in Martinez, which is near San Francisco.  He and his ex-wife, Pattie Stehle, (Santa Clara) remain good friends and are proud of their two sons.   Dick never lost his passion of cars and has taken up surfing again.  To facilitate surfing he has purchased a house near Puerto Vallarta. He enjoys travel to Europe and has an unfulfilled ambition to do some vintage road racing on the historic circuits in EnglandŠGoodwood in particular as he has a car that raced there in 1954. 

·         Gene Salas ( will be a grandfather again.  His daughter, Kamron is pregnant for the first time with three babies, two boys and a girl.  That will make 10 grandchildren for Gene.

·         Jerry Brown ( won the salsa making contest for the Oxnard Salsa Festival.  His prize was 10 cases of his salsa, bottled and labeled.  Congratulations Jerry!

·         Joni Wikum Swindle and Joe Swindle (57) ( are continuing to escort a few special vacations through Camarillo Travel.  In 2005 they will be going to China in the spring and Nova Scotia in the fall.  Email them for information if interested.

·         Raelene Brill Manzer and Bill Manzer (55) will be joining the class of 54 on their cruise to celebrate their 50th.

·         Deanna Hill Middleton passed away on June 17.  She had fought a very courageous five year battle with cancer.  I know her daughter would appreciate cards, including memories of Deanna, sent to The family of Deanna Hill Middleton, 9 Calle Fronte, Camarillo, Ca. 93012.

·         Lorena ŒRene¹ Harvey Smith passed away on July 9. She had fought a courageous battle with cancer. She was a lifetime resident of Oxnard (Nyeland Acres).

·         Marlene Freeman Riel¹s husband passed away in July. Their home is in Brooking, Oregon.

·         George Dever¹s sister, Carol (55), passed away recently.  Carol lived in Camarillo.

Happy New Year.  It has been about six months since I compiled the information you have sent for our newsletter.  Thank you for continuing to send email address changes and other information.  When we plan our 50th reunion this will make our planning so much nicer.  Speaking of reunions, the class of 1955 is planning their 50th and I will include their information in this newsletter. 

·         OUHS Class of 1955 50th Reunion-September 24, 2005 at Las Posas Country Club in Camarillo.  For information contact Jerry White at or Karen Hackett Phipps at .  It will not be long before we have the 50th celebration for the class of 1956.

·         Jim Cooluris updated his website and I found it very interesting with wonderful photography.

·         Don Beckham and Anne Ruscher opened their house for the Oxnard Autumn Historic Home Tour, which was a benefit for Food Share.  Their beautifully restored home is on F Street in Oxnard.  It was a trip down memory lane as we strolled those streets to view the homes.  We also saw many OUHS friends.

·         George Jackson and his wife Pat are celebrating a dual victory for the new year. George had two forms of cancer on his kidneys.  The left kidney had a renal cell cancer that was not treatable with chemotherapy. The right kidney as well as his bone marrow was infected with non-Hodgkin¹s Lymphoma.  The chemo appeared to work on the right kidney and the left kidney was removed by surgery on the 30th of December.  George is recovering at home at present.  Get well George!

·         Joan Wikum Swindle and Joe will be leaving for sixteen day tour of China escorted by Joe and Joni with a group of 25 folks.  They will be offering two tours a year, one international and one domestic to special places of interest. They are now living in their newly remodeled condo, enjoying good health, wine, food and playing golf together.

·         Ron Post has retired from active ministry. He writes, ³I am pleased to have begun two wonderful missions in my life. NW Medical Teams is one of the largest International Relief & Development non profits in the country doing $100 million of work around the world each year.  After stepping down from that mission I formed another, Mission Increase Foundation.  This foundation trains Christian missions in how to develop their funding base more effectively and we award nearly $2 million a year to these missions as matching grants.² They are expanding across the country and expect to award $50-$80 million a year in the next 8-10 years.   Ron will continue to serve on the board but he is looking forward to more travel and time with grandchildren and church. .

·         Donny Burrows and Stephanie visited Gene Salas and Peggy recently. Donny shared photos of the Salas beautiful home and yard in Santa Maria.  Gene and Peggy also have 3 new grandchildren.  Daughter Kamron had triplets.  This makes 10 grandchildren for Gene

·         David Core passed away in December. He had been a plumbing contractor in Oxnard before moving to Texas a few years ago.  In high school he played the trumpet in the band. 

·         Jerry Edwards passed away after being diagnosed with malignant melanoma with metastases and only lived two weeks after diagnosis.  Kay Drummond Hensley  provided this sad news.
